Ted Titus

Ted Titus' art is a handshake between visceral emotional nerve endings and detailed, deliriant tinged visuals. Starting in pen and ink illustration, a dark and dynamic figure focused art style emerged, bathed in surreal sludge, which links back to influence from Burroughs, Ballard, and a mess of authors as conceptual kin. Currently working in the medium of photography, I now use my photography as a method of turning my internal thoughts and feelings into visual metaphors as a way to explain them but also to cloak them in opaque artistic language. While my work is largely reflective of the personal, at times it deviates to shared aspects of social interconnection. In this subject matter, such as reflection on what is shared creative moment, social anxieties, and questioning of societal values. New materialist philosophy while only considered on a creative level also plays a role in the composition the artwork. Being in the reduction of hierarchy between model and material. Both holding equal value in frame. Be it in staged scenes, groups of models, or sculpture, my art stands unmistakably shaped by decades of dedication to the calling of an artist.

In a desire to chart unknown territories I began gathering materials to create what I call “Degenerate Art”. These sculptures come about as the culmination of using and reusing materials until they have broken down into a free form creative mulch pile. Pieces are held together between tension and glue and rarely survive long past being photographed. At times live models are brought in to be adorned into costumes made from materials. As the process for making these sculptures is surrounded by uncertainty the outcome remains unpredictable.

These Limited Spaces have been a long-running method I have for creating my visual metaphors. As a way of saying, “What I have included is all the necessary components.” These small art directed pieces of carpet have historically been surreal in appearance as well as concept with naked painted models wildly displaying actions to reveal my point. But in these recent works, instead, we find a sobered color, perspective, and actors within the image.  Reflecting much more casual subjects like social friction or making art, these works are my most straight forward and easily understood.

Staged Scenes - Less focused on stylization, these works focus on creating a moment in time, which, without context,
leaves the viewer piecing together meaning starting from the name of the work and working backwords.
